Which gender of lamb is best for me?
There are three options when it comes to choosing the gender of your Babydoll lamb:
Ewe lamb (female)
Ram lamb (intact male)
Wether lamb (castrated male)
The choice that is best for you depends on what your goals are. I will speak to each option individually.
Ewe lambs give you the most flexibility if you are undecided if you want to have lambs of your own or not. They can make great pets or you can breed them if you choose to. They are quiet and gentle.
Only purchase a ram lamb for breeding purposes. Rams are NOT pets. If you treat them as pets, they can become dangerous. Rams are not shy and can be aggressive and will ram you. They are best left alone as much as possible. Many will claim that their ram is a teddy bear and won’t hurt anyone. Yes, many rams can be non aggressive but I will never trust them.
If you have no intention of breeding, wethers make great pets! They have the confidence of a ram without any of the aggressive traits. They are the sweetest little buddies.
Olde English Southdown Babydoll Sheep have a very strong flocking instinct. I will only sell single lambs to those that already have sheep. If you do not currently have sheep, you will need to plan on purchasing a pair at the least. I feel three lambs is the ideal number for those starting out because if something happens to one (god forbid) then the other two will still have each other as buddies.
